Have you ever spent days and days making up flavors of ice cream that no one’s ever eaten or heard of before?

I could never imagine that my favorite cheese, Brie, could be turned into a delectably sweet, rich, and creamy ice cream called “Let it Brie”.  But these are the types of imaginative and succulent flavors that Sweet Melody chef and owner, Mike Romeu has been crafting in his very own kitchen. It came as no surprise to me after having the pleasure of trying Sweet Melody Ice Cream that this 8 month company was rapidly growing into its own business and winning the hearts of ice cream fans all over Miami.

Sweet Melody had originally started 8 years ago when Mike and his then fiancé, Elena, were inspired by their grandmothers and Cuban roots to create unique yet familiar flavors of ice cream. Sadly, Elena passed away in July 2009 and with that, their dream of sharing their culture and creativity in the form of ice cream came to a halt.

After some time Mike decided that it was only right to continue to pursue that dream he once shared and make it into a reality. Using his daughter as an inspiration, Mike brought about Sweet Melody, named after his daughter and of course his love for music. (If you look at the list of flavors you will see how much of an influence music truly is to his own art)

Sweet Melody truly is special. Its variety of flavors is a reflection of Mike’s passion and ingenuity.

The dairy used for the ice cream is hormone free and sweeteners are GMO free as well. Mike doesn’t use stabilizers or artificial flavors or colors (exceptions are noted such as Jack and Coke flavor which has Coca Cola). The highest quality Belgium chocolate and vanilla bean is used to prepare Sweet Melody ice cream.

I was lucky to try an array of flavors from Sweet Melody’s list of 22! Flavors like Gorgonzola Jam, Cherry Darling, Churros con Cajeta, Let it Brie, and Bourbon Pecan were as satisfying as they were beautiful.

I have to say that my favorite was the Let it Brie, baked brie ice cream with apricot jam swirl, silvered almonds and diced apricots. It is a perfect balance of sweet and savory combined in a creamy, cool spoonful of goodness! I am being biased because I am not only a huge fan of brie, but an even bigger fan of the Beatles who are reflected in its name.

Like the Let it Brie flavor, Gorgonzola Jam is a bit sharp in its taste, and I would only recommend it to those that are not only cheese fans, but can handle adventure in their ice cream. Bourbon Pecan and Cherry Darling both live up to their names and leave your mouth watering after every bite.

Sweet Melody is currently being served in two restaurants located in Coral Gables:
Trust & Co. and Caffe Vialetto. The ice cream typically runs out before anticipated and orders are growing each week. Mike is also working on new and eccentric flavors every week for places like the YVE in Downtown Miami and even looking to collaborate with Misha’s cupcakes. The Peach Lavender Amaretto is one of his newest creations and is already generating some buzz!

Sweet Melody is also available for delivery and pints range from $8.00 – $12.00. There is definitely something for everyone when it comes to Sweet Melody Ice cream, though none is ever ordinary.

And why would you want ordinary! In a place that has constant 90 degree weather, tropical views, and an array of latin cultures, Sweet Melody showcases Miami’s best features.

Mike Romeu’s passion for his art is evident in every bite of heaven that you take from Sweet Melody’s Ice Cream. Flavors full of spices, aromas and enchantment, Sweet Melody is a must try for every ice cream and food lover alike.

( Do yourself a flavor and start with a pint of “Me So Corny” . I promise you will thank me later! )

Trust and Co

A Fresh and fun take on fine dining, Trust and Co surprises you with every bite!

Going into Trust and Co I could already feel a very cool and casual vibe in the air. They had a live performer which seemed to bring everything together so perfectly and gave the restaurant a touch of a fun yet relaxing atmosphere.

I had already heard so much about Trust and Co’s eclectic dinner menu and was so excited that I was going to try Brunch, so it didn’t surprise me when I discovered that Trust and Co’s brunch menu was absolutely delicious and exciting.

I started with an order of the popular Bacon and Date croquettes with their house made membrillo compote. If you are in the mood for something savory than this is definitely the right way to start your brunch. Crunchy, cheesy and delightfully satisfying.

I of course had to try one of Trust and Co’s signature cocktails, the Trust Mojito. It is the perfect brunch pairing that has a refreshing feel with every sip.

I was very happy with my choices for the main course. I say choices because I couldn’t just try one dish!

I usually go for a classic eggs benedict for breakfast or brunch so I decided to try Trust and Co’s Pork Belly Benny. This was no ordinary eggs benedict. The poached eggs and smoked pork belly blended so well that it melted in my mouth with every bite. The dish is flavorful yet not overwhelming and if you are a fan a pork you will surely love it.

I asked our server, Mike, to make my second choice of entrée one of his own favorites and he did not disappoint!  The Breakfast Cassoulet was as tasty as it was visually colorful! Organic eggs, roasted tomato sauce, Irish cheddar and torn corn were a treat for my palate. They top it off with  Zak’s toast that is buttery, crispy and perfect for dipping. It definitely showcases Trust and Co’s integrity, quality, ability and passion for great food.

I somehow managed to have room for dessert and tried the Coconut Cake a la mode. This was the right amount of indulgence to end my afternoon. The cake is moist and you can taste the fresh flakes of coconut with a sweet and milky flavor. I have to also mention that the ice cream that it was paired with was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Sweet corn ice cream with roasted blueberry puree and bacon-almond brittle. If I could take a bucket home with me I would have.

I really enjoyed my experience at Trust and Co. The environment has such a great energy and is full of life. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable, add that with the fact that their food is not only yummy but truly special with fresh ingredients and an almost farm to table feel. I can’t wait to go back!

Oh My Gosh Brigadeiros

The first Chocolate Brigadeiro boutique of it’s kind in Florida, Oh My Gosh indulges your sweet tooth with what is known to be a national icon in Brazil.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I first walked in to Oh My Gosh Brigadeiros. I knew I was going to be trying out gourmet chocolates, but I had no idea what a brigaderio was or what it really consisted of. The smell of vanilla and cocoa immediately caught my attention.  I was greeted by Luciano Brilho, the owner of Oh My Gosh Brigadeiros, who was happy to introduce me to the concept of what a brigaderio was.

A common and very popular Brazilian delicacy, the brigadeiro is made from condensed milk, powdered chocolate, butter and chocolate sprinkles to cover the outside layer. It makes up a big part of the Brazilian culture and is present in innumerable occasions: from birthday parties for children to more luxurious parties.

Luciano explained to me that eating a brigadeiro is said to give people a familiar sensation because it is a way to remember happy times spent with family and friends. He wanted to bring this sense of culture and familiarity to South Florida and was truly passionate about making sure that everyone could experience this tradition for themselves.

At this point I was even more excited to try my first brigaderio! I started with their traditional milk brigadeiro accompanied by their ever so popular Cappuccino with a ring of Nutella!

PhotoGrid_1460858807775OH MY GOSH were the only words that I could use to express how I felt after taking my first bite, which is why it is so perfect that this brigadeiro boutique would hold that name. I could taste the condensed milk and the blend of rich chocolate that surrounded it. It truly is a perfect combination and at no point was it ever too sweet! It was just perfect.

The brigadeiro itself is offered in more elaborate forms where the preparation includes high quality ingredients, giving it a higher status of a gourmet dessert.

OMG Brigadeiros offers a total of 19 flavors, 14 of which are gluten free and 1 that is vegan. I was lucky enough to try more than half and each one had a different feel, taste and smell. But each one was delightfully sinful yet so perfectly innocent! ( I was in a total state of ecstasy )

If you can’t swing by the shop, than you can always order and they ship nationwide. They are currently working on a delivery system for all of Miami Dade County and I couldn’t be happier with that news.

Oh My Gosh Brigadeiros caters to all different kinds of events and they can customize to fit your needs. The environment is relaxed and you can pretty much smell, taste and feel the sweetness in the air.

These days, a confluence of forces from the culinary to the entrepreneurial have sweetened the scene to new heights, and Oh My Gosh Brigadeiros is no exception . If you have yet to try this charming chocolate brigadeiro boutique, I highly recommend you treat yourself to a box or two . I promise that it will be a taste like no other !

There comes a certain point where we are no longer interested in attending our local Fair for its rides and entertainment, but purely for the sole purpose of enjoying the variety of sweet sweet indulgences that it has to offer.

Donut Divas brings the best part of this experience into one restaurant that has a touch of carnival fun.

The moment you park your car outside of this establishment, you are welcomed with the sweet aroma of funnel cakes and deep fried oreos. It truly is, at least for me, a childhood dream come true.

And that is exactly the casual vibe that you get once inside. The staff is always friendly and ready to help in the case that you aren’t sure if you want to pair your bacon cheese fries with waffle ice cream sandwiches or beignets topped with ice cream. The options are endless, which is what makes Donut Divas so special. The ambience is colorful and entertaining. It is the perfect venue for kids and even adult parties!

From Turkey Legs to Cotton Candy, if you have craved it or dreamed about it, I guarantee Donut Divas has it!

There is no surprise that as a lover of bacon and cheese, my favorite thing on their menu is their Bacon Cheese Fries. Be sure to try them and pair them with deep fried snickers. Try a little bit of everything whenever you visit and you won’t be disappointed
